 Hi guys,

Does anyone know of an individual giving surf casting lessons in Durban.

I have been fishing with a coffee grinder for along time and want to learn on a multiplier.I have a new multiplier and want to learn the proper way of surf casting.

Is there anyone who can point me towards a tutor or someone who can show me some ropes or give me some casting lessons,

Howsit Bru, im not sure if they still do it, but Kings in Hunter Street, Durban used to have casting clinics.

Tips for casting: keep your swing smooth. If you try swing hard to throw further you will get over winds. Also play with that tension knob on the side by your handle a bit. It shouldn't bee too tight - can damage your spool over time. Ans shouldn't be too loose - will cause the spool to spin too fast also causing overwinds.

If your reel has some sort of braking system like magnets, centrifugal etc then dont be shy to make use of it while youre still learning. As your style improves you can loosen the brakes little by little- much like the tension knob.

Like rbacht said - its all about balance. Find out what line, weight etc will best suit your rod n reel setup and then try tune your reel to match it.


Practice your casting, timing to get your thumb "educated" and leader knots as much as you can. Trust me it will pay off big time in the long run not only in terms of safety, but you will save money on sinkers too.

Im no pro with multipliers - bought my first one in November last year but asked as many folks as I could for input and researched a LOT here on Sealine. I now cast overwinds say 2 out of every 10 throws, and i now get just under 90m with a 4oz so im a lot happier.

Perseverance + patience. You'll get there eventually
