I have been fishing for probably some 58 years, that is if you include my antics as a two year old toddler when I caught a number of sardines in the shallows during the annual sardine run on the Natal coast. Anyway, I have done all types of fishing, from freshwater bass fishing, fly fishing (both freshwater and saltwater), traditional "pap gooi, off shore boat fishing and more specifically rock and surf fishing the last 15 years.
I have always been quite successful in types of fishing but the single factor that has been limiting my success rate in rock and surf fishing is probably my casting distance. I seem to have adopted a style that limits my casting distance to maximum 90 to 100 meters (with sinker alone) when my cast is perfect. I have watched people like Wikus (Galjoen) and Henning doing their magic but have come to the conclusion that these guys are in fact the wrong people to follow as both seem to depend largely on brute force to attain their apparent extreme distances. I unfortunately have a medical history with both my back and neck and can't use brute force to get distance.
I have watched several demos on the internet and it appears that us South Africans have our own unique style of casting while most of the rest of the world adopts the so-called Pendulum cast technique. I have personally never seen anyone actually using this technique and haven't tried it myself. Anyone out here that uses this technique and is it really such a good technique to reach good distances without having to depend on "brute force" to get it?
I have been so frustrated with my casting that I have actually considered offering a reward of R500 for anyone that can couch me to reach say 120 meters with baited tackle! LOL
By the way, I am currently using a Tecnium Medium 14ft rod paired with a Tor 20 for edibles. I am getting better distances with this outfit than with my heavier EXAGE 1468 but still cannot get more than 90 to 100 meters with sinker alone.
