Long distance casting The pedulum cast versus the so-called South African cast technique

I have been fishing for probably some 58 years, that is if you include my antics as a  two year old toddler when I caught a number of sardines in the shallows during the annual sardine run on the Natal coast. Anyway, I have done all types of fishing, from freshwater bass fishing, fly fishing (both freshwater and saltwater), traditional "pap gooi, off shore boat fishing and more specifically rock and surf fishing the last 15 years.

I have always been quite successful in types of fishing but the single factor that has been limiting my success rate in rock and surf fishing is probably my casting distance. I seem to have adopted a style that limits my casting distance to maximum 90 to 100 meters (with sinker alone) when my cast is perfect. I have watched people like Wikus (Galjoen) and Henning doing their magic but have come to the conclusion that these guys are in fact the wrong people to follow as both seem to depend largely on brute force to attain their apparent extreme distances. I unfortunately have a medical history with both my back and neck and can't use brute force to get distance.

I have watched several demos on the internet and it appears that us South Africans have our own unique style of casting while most of the rest of the world adopts the so-called Pendulum cast technique. I have personally never seen anyone actually using this technique and haven't tried it myself. Anyone out here that uses this technique and is it really such a good technique to reach good distances without having to depend on "brute force" to get it?

I have been so frustrated with my casting that I have actually considered offering a reward of R500 for anyone that can couch me to reach say 120 meters with baited tackle! LOL

By the way, I am currently using a Tecnium Medium 14ft rod paired with a Tor 20 for edibles. I am getting better distances with this outfit than with my heavier EXAGE 1468 but still cannot get more than 90 to 100 meters with sinker alone.

My personal opinion is a lighter reel and rod works better as you get older and lose strength.

Although, after reading this you've inspired me to go and dust off my Torium 30 and 1468 to go and see if I can still cast it properly.

Kaspaas. the pendulum is a difficult cast to master but will increase your casting distance as it uses in laymans description a very long drop with a huge rotation 360degrees which builds up huge speed of the bait and weight which increases the casting distance.

Casting is all about Speed, Power and Timing. 2 of these without the 3rd will always result in a failed cast or minor distances.

A full pendulum needs a punch in the cast for extreme distances but a 6oz on your setup with a full pendulum completed well will launch a sinker only to 130m+ this because the length of the drop and the long rotation MAGNIFY's the power you put in.

This is the best training Video.

This one shows it's use in fishing circumstances and is in slow motion and well filmed showing angles and trajectory.

Thanks Craig. Will look at it. I have downloaded a number of these clips already. Should probably walk down to the beach when its empty and actually try my hand at it.

Are there any Sealiners that actually use this style? Personally I haven't encountered anyone.

One thing I noted, was the fact that these guys all use a long but end which obviously assists the cast.

with our stiff rods and your back and neck problem a pendulum cast could well result in a stretched poepstring as well, I am sorry I have tried it but with our stiff rods just can't get a pendulum cast right. I have snapped 3x tips of HMG rods

Hmmm.... something to consider.

In one of the demo clips the caster however suggested that one should start practicing with the off-the-ground cast first because one can break the rod if the pendulum cast is not executed correctly.

personally think its half technique and other half your tackle.. is your tackle designed to reach the distances you want with the way you cast it?

to help you improve maybe if you can get your hands on a slimline version like the blue marlin / pentagon range of rods that.. check some of these posts

also the slimline pentagon might well help you gain better distance for less effort

might wanna invest in a reel thats designed for long distance casting.. these toriums etc are not for that purpose

a good caster will cast further than you using same rod but you using a thorium type reel and him using this type of reels made for casting

Funny!!

Where do you want to go and need a + 90m cast.

I cast a 100-130m but very seldom need such a distance cast.

Kaspaas plenty fish right in your casting range!

Agree, I believe it is all teqhnique as well as some strenth in upper body. How fast you bring your arm over.
Once you this right you can easily gain another 50M plus.
Its not impossible..

No all the top distance casters use a very short butt section.

The Western Australia Aggregate casting champion used a 1468 Exage to cast to just over 200m using the pendulum.

I have built a number of Super Slims that are now as far afield as Perth, Japan and Indonesia and are being used for full pendulum.

BUT..... if the rod is rated ie 8oz for RSA style cast your upper limit for the pendulum will be 5oz as it is CORRECT that you will over compress and break the tip if you try it with an 8oz.

Yes using a Magged or even standard reel like an ABU 6500C or Daiwa 7HT Mag or the Akios will increase your casting distances dramatically was well.

So I would say 5oz with small bait for the Technium Heavy on a pendulum.

This is what happens to the tip in the cast:

As you can see these rods (Centurys) get a good working out in the tip.

A pendulum cast, slower with a smaller reel will definitely help and as Oom Kaspaas says, go learn on an abandoned stretch of beach

Craig and other guys, please this is not a trick question.

What would you classify as a far cast - fishing edibles
Not casting a sand-prawn as bait - least half a sard (cob bait)

What would you classify as a far cast - In-eds

Again not only a mullet head - bait at least the size of a tennis ball - mackerel head.(Bronzy bait)

I know the bait weight will play a role but guys that fish will know what I am talking about.

Depends on setup used oom simon

eds say half pillie and 7ounce 120m fair
ineds whole flapped mackie say 30cm size and 6-7 ounce 100m fair

allot depends on rod reel line combos
