Slashing of Recreational Kreef Quota

Hi All

The Department of fisheries is looking to reduce the current kreef season by cutting it in half.

We currently have 183 tons and Fisheries' proposal is to cut it to 83.5 tons.

Melkbos to Yzers (Area 7) is to be closed to all fishing including commercial. (An 80 ton "research" allocation will be allowed for commercial trap boats.

Please urgently contact Cary Steele Boe at Recreational Fisheries Services and provide your comments.

The survey that was conducted on the economic value of recreational kreef is not being released

The only reason given for suppressing the survey is that Fisheries would like to do more research.

Where do I start? l suppose the good news is that there is going to be a kreef season. The bad news is that today, 21.10.2013, at a 'consultation' meeting, with Fisheries, we were told that prelimary our TAC is  being reduced by more than half. From 183 tons to 83 tons. However this has not been finalized, and the DDG has not put signature to paper.
 
I hoping that this is ploy to scare us into what could be, and what is going to be in reality is different. The up side is that on Wednesday, 23.10.2013, there is another meeting and our suggestions would by then been considered, and a final TAC decided.  Fisheries are definitely aware that all the recreational entities present, were not happy with their proposal and made counter proposals., which fisheries promised they would consider.
 
The other sectors are only being reduced by up to 12% and the near shore commercials will remain as is. We found this to be totally unconstitutional, in the fact that Fisheries, is trying to minimalize the public sector, namely, the Recreational sector, with regards to the use of the marine resource.
 
Furthermore, a study was done with regards to the socio- econmic effect recreational lobster fishing has, more than a a year ago. Fisheries refuse to release this document, and informed us that it was not accepted as an official document, and that they would prefere to have a holistic study done, involving all the sectors. The very reason I asked for this study to be done was to give clarity as to how recreational lobster fishing effects the economies of the Northern and Western Cape coastal regions. Heaven forbid if this document says it has a greater affect than commercial lobster fishing. We all know who benefits from commercial lobster fishing, of which 90% is exported. ( To say that the document is not official, in my mind is incorrect. If public money was spent on the study, it's official.) I need to see this document. If anybody has any idea of how to get a copy, please let me know.
 
More news after Wednesday's meeting.

Problem is that studies become "unofficial" if it doesn't reflect what they want it to reflect. If they are using my tax money to pay for it, I am entitled to it.

Hi Bennie

Spot on!

The study would support the view that recreational tourism founded on kreef is more valuable to an area than giving kreef to an area.

The tricky part is that the study would probably take it down to the nearest rands and cents.

Where do I apply for "Interim Relief" status?

I am truly speechless. The guys who we suspect are doing a sizeable amount of overfishing, get an increased quota - is this just to make their overfishing legal? Be it at the expense of every small west coast town?

Has DAFF mentioned any proposed plans to improve the policing? After all, it is the lack of the policing that is resulting in the current situation. To add fat to the fire, they then they go and reduce the Allowable catch allocation the sectors where policing is possibly the easiest to carry out.

I imagine we will possible (Hopefully) see an increase in the amount of days for our recreational sector, but I am pretty sure you can bet your bottom dollar on the fact that the illegal harvesting of cray is going to increase in all sectors.

Get a reporter onto it asap. If the story becomes public, support will increase and so will the pressure on them.

Hi Captain

Neither Cary nor I can get our heads around the basis for suppressing the report on the economics of recreational kreef fishing.

Cary was instrumental in applying pressure to have the report commissioned in the first place.

Much stuff is usually shared quite openly and is allowed to be discussed and debated but none of the data collected in this report is even hinted at.

That is why you should get a reporter to ask some difficult questions.

Thanks Magician, now someone needs to get that specific reporter to pose questions in a follow up story.

Ja... read the electronic artical... doesn't really have the teeth it deserves. .. I wonder if the timing of the announcement was not planned. News is more focused on the budget speach thus this will slip through under the radar.

That's my point. What they do is they get the press involved, it's an old trick. (Clear evidence that they are hiding something)

I think that in this case the Burger was at the portfolio committee bunfight and the issue came up.

That's politics for you... either way we are in for some troubled times ahead.

Personally I doubt there will be much change and if any , i doubt the degree of change will be substantial enough to make an impact. As much as I hate saying it... Australia is starting to look pretty inviting if this is the precursor of things to come.

Considering we only get 26 days and those being centered around public holidays(Read time with the family on terra firma), plus the fact that we will have to contend against the weather and sea conditions, I think if the average person gets 2 or 3 trips out this season it will be a lot.
