the letter i wrote to the editor of the Centurion Rekord:

Att: The Editor

Hello,

I am writing to you today to inform you of the Rietvlei dam cleanup project happening on the 14th to the 19th of January, I have been put in charge of the arrangements for the cleanup, and would like to involve the Rekord in covering the story and bringing public awareness to what we are trying to achieve.

The dam is being pouted by 100’s upon 100’s of meters of wasted, discarded and broken off fishing lines, and masses of invasive water plants or weeds, these weedbeds are actually making the problem worse by aiding in the lines breaking off and therefor further adding to the pollution.

A group of concerned anglers have decided that enough is enough and that we want to clean up the waterway, in conjunction with the rietvlei nature reserve and the group know as the friends of Rietvlei we are going to spend the week on the property clearing the excess weed and removing the broken and waste line.

Many animals are affected by the line pollution including geese, coots, ducks, otters, and not to mention the fish…

We aim to clear this prolific angling venue of this problem, but we need your help in covering the story and spreading awareness of the project we hope to make an annual event.
We will not get paid for doing this and we do it out of good will towards the Rietvlei nature reserve, the friends of rietvlei, and the Tswane dept. of nature conservation…

Regards

Thanks Monsoon,

Hope to see you there. Not my initiative, will be assisting and spreading the word. Even half a days assistance in that week 14-19 Jan 2013 would be fantastic.

Cmon the rest of you overfed and under fished Sealiners. Get rid of some that festive season beer and turkey boepense, and come assist ?

People that are interested in assisting, please bring the following:
- Steel rakes
- Grapple hooks and rope
- Those that have boats (big) please bring.

They are only allowing 5 x motorized boats at a time on the water, but will work in shifts.

The more the merrier.....

From the Facebook URL mentioned in the 1st post...

these disturbing pics are of a coot i found in the reeds close to my setup in the last week, we removed the line, cleaned the area and put antiseptic on the wound(s) and set it free... it did not know how to swim as its legs have been tethered together for so long

Awesome! We need more people like this around.. If I was closer I would certainly assist... Hope you guys get the support you/the dam deserves... Many hands make light work! I hope many of the Sealine members who have fished these waters come out and assist..

Great initiative!

Did a bit of bassing at Rietvlei during December, and saw a lot of the specimen and conventional guys really struggling with their lines snagging on the weeds and old lines.

Also tripped up a couple of times on line discarded on the bank.

Will definitely try and make it to help out.

Cheers
