Ja maar jy verstaan nie, as I always say to my wife when I want to go fishing, I understand reeling in the line and all those wonderfulful things, the point I am trying to make is that today I fish at let say 100 m and clip in the line, tomorrow I fish at 120m. I my "confusius rules" mind there is now 20m of line out there with a "clip in" weakness in it, or am I too pedantic about the issue?

Well what ever I do wrong I have to fix, the shotgun approach of spraying boms all over the place is not working, I will experiment and give feedback if I find something that works

If I want to kolgooi I just use my shorter rods with which I can only cast 75m max. But that's just me.

So van casting gepraat in die nuwe Oewerhengelaar is daar 'n artikel oor hoe daar ingegooi moet word, volgens die man is dit nou 'n reel by kompetisies en as die hengelaars nie daaraan voldoen nie kan die pen gediskwalifisser word? Weet die kompetisie manne hiervan? Eerste keer wat ek van so iets hoor

CC, in the new Bank Angler magazine is an article on casting and it is stated that the overhead cast (as explained in the article) are to become a rule in competitive angling and other types of casting can lead to disqualification. Its the first we have hear of this...

Apologies CC switched to Afrikaans without thinking. Basically the article states that the cast should be an overhead cast and that anglers are not allowed to use the "swivel" - I think they mean the pedulum cast. This is to ensure the safety of other anglers. This is apparently an international ruling.

I agree, as long as you don't cast all over the show and bother other anglers, lets see what the comp guys say maybe there are problems we don't know about

New rules, based on the rules applicable in certain World Championship (WC) disciplines i.e. carp and feeder fishing, have been introduced. Personally I believe that the implementation of these rules are short sighted and does not benefit the average league angler. Obviously the handling and keeping of fish is a no-brainer, but the implementation is problematic, fish tend to die in the new, "knotless" keepnets, due to low oxygen levels (these nets are too dense, not allowing a free flow of water) and are placed in warm shallow water (unlike the canals and deep waters fished in Europe) - exacerbating the problem. The casting issue was raised on a number of occasions, especially with the SA Carp Team fishing the WC. I think it’s just a bit of "professional" jealousy as it is evident that they battle to beat the likes of GP & co, even when forced to cast overhead. The rule that every fish has to be netted and unhooked on the unhooking mat also baffled me (it’s my understanding that this has now changed). It stands to reason that a small fish that can be swung to hand and put into the net (or released) immediately, would be far less stressed than one that had to be netted, unhooked, taken out of the net and only then dropped into the keepnet/water. The fact that fish has to be landed within your designated peg/area, also defies logic. We are due to the shallow nature of our dams and the large fish we sometimes catch, forced to fish at long distances allowing hooked fish to move out of our area. Not being able to land a fish that you've legitimately hooked I believe is unfair - even worse for junior anglers. Apparently the purpose of this rule is to force anglers to fish with thicker lines, having more control over fish (and less breakages). Reality is a completely different story! I’m of the opinion that this rule totally negates the traditional sportsmanship that our (South African) bank angling facet was used to - everyone is now becoming a policeman enforcing this rule, trying his/her best to get fish disqualified - as opposed to concentrate on fishing (and enjoying it). Every country has their own rules why can we not have our own? The rules are in any event applied selectively as fishing in pairs as we do is also not the norm in Europe (with the exception of Carp fishing). I apologize if I sound a bit irritated, but I cannot see how the implementation of these rules (with the exception of handling of fish) will make bank angling a better sport! To add insult to injury these rules are seemingly being changed and amended by the powers that be, as we go along – how much longer do we want to confuse everybody?[size=] ![]() On the issue of line clips, you'll normally find that it is only the steel line clips (such as someof the Shimano's (series after the 8010 Aero's), that will damage line. As a norm the "plastic" line clip does not damage the line, not even low dia. ones. An alternative to clipping the line is simply using electrical tape/elastoplast and tape across the spool (also work for centre pins) at the required distance, it is quite easy to remove in case of a big fish taking off - just remember as with the line clip , to mark your line with a permanent marker so that you know where to re-clip/tape the line after you've landed your fish. ![]()

Thanks Hippo, and so we learn again. I have never though of taping my line instead of clipping it and you are right rules are made by some as they think it will give them an advantage thereby taking the enjoyment of our sport out of the equation. I also just want to thank all of the experienced guys out there of taking the time to do posts on the forum, it is really appreciated and makes the site a great one to visit daily.

Hi Guys , I know this Subject is Quite Old Now, but I saw on one of the Supercast DVD's One of the Guys Used an Elastic Band in the Clip and Round the Line. I too have noticed that if you rub your finger down the leader where you clipped in when you finished fishing last time you can feel that the line has a Little " nick or bend" in it which must weaken it . I always Cut my quick link off my leader the next time i go fishing and shorten my leader just past where the Nick is. I am new to fishing so not the expert but plan on learning fast.

Theres one thing that stops me from using the line clip method and hope someone can enlighten me. What if I put a bit more power in my cast by accident or through fear of not reaching the same distance and the line hits the clip while in mid air and it either bounces back, breaks off the bomb or snaps the line? How do you get it to gently reach the clip? Seems ineffective in this regard.

If you are fishing a line clip you already know how hard to cast to hit the clip. I have just recently changed spools on a reel and had been fishing at 135m on the clip and punched a cast out to the 135m only to find that the new spool I put on was clipped from a previous session at 65m. If you are used to fishing a clip you raise the rod to vertical or past vertical. This I did do the line hit the clip at considerable force and I still managed to cushion the unexpected impact and didn't break my line. Unhook the clip and re-cast. Cast a plain P4 to what I considered 135m, took up the slack, clipped the line. Reeled in and was 129m, recast to the clip, unclipped and pulled 6m of line off the reel, re clipped at 135m and carried on fishing. When fishing Bloemhof or any venue where sizeable fish are being landed I prefer to mark my line with a permanent marker. Cast and you see the mark coming up, let it go off the reel and then feather the line to a stop. When fishing enough using this method you'll eventually get it that the mark on the line will be between the tip and reel, every time and after a while between the same 2 guides every time.
