Who has a 'Bug-Out' bag?

We are fortunate as South Africans in respect to natural disasters, it's something we rarely think about or consider. But keeping that in mind, are you and your family prepared for the eventuality of something happening? Not just a disaster, the way things are going these days it could be something completely different. Here's an interesting thought...

I am certain this is a question you have asked yourself.  You lie awake in your bed at night next to the one you love and you wonder.  If something were to happen to your home, if the soldiers were to come and order you into the street and you have five minutes, what would you take?  Things of fiscal value or things of sentiment?  Documents or photographs?  Do you have a plan, everything in one place where you can put your hand on it right away and lift it and run into the street with it should that night of dread ever fall?  Or would you lift happenstance, piecemeal, guided by the heart, and so find yourself on the street with an ornamental dog and your favorite recipe book and beloved old jacket in your arms and the chair in which you made love that night wrestled somehow, superhumanly, out the door and lying at your feet?

Five minutes.

Think about it.  Count one-one-thousand two-one-thousand three-one-thousand and when you get to three-hundred-one-thousand you are out of time, time is no more, whatever doom it is you have imagined has arrived.

What exactly is a bug out bag?
A bug out bag is a collection of basic survival gear that might be required in a disaster scenario, natural or otherwise. It is transportable, and consolidated into a single pack or two so that you can grab it and go in a hurry. I like to keep one at home and one in each vehicle, but how you implement the bug out bag is up to you.

What goes in a bug out bag?
Anticipating worst-case scenarios is never fun, but to properly pack your bug out bag with only the essential items, you must start here. Imagine no food, no electricity, no water, and no city services for days. What types of things would you need to survive?

A brilliant site... Lots of good ideas and some heated discussions that are well worth reading... Some food for thought to say the least...

This will depend on a number of factors, such as the area you live in (climate, elevation, etc….) But the basics are as follows:

Blatantly you guys have been watching Mc Gyver or something of the like. If today's soldiers walked in, the 1st thing to go would be your BOB

Natural disasters - living on the coastline, perhaps a tsunami or similar, would more than likely find you floating down the nile. The list is endless - this is typical yank track of thought and then they never find themselves ready for disaster - look at 911 as a classic example!

MacGyver has nothing to do with being prepared. Macgyver was a resourceful agent able to solve complex problems with everyday materials he found at hand, along with his ever-present duct tape and Swiss Army Knife. He had the ability to improvise NOT SURVIVE.

Being able to do the basics like make a fire with just a piece of magnesium or flint or even less is a skill of note, let me tell you. Having a general knowledge of trapping or at least catching yourself a small meal for the evening, besides fishing, is another very valuable skill.

Fine maybe this topic is not for everyone but then again what a boring world if we were all the same. YES! The Americans do go a little overboard but to measure an entire nation by one event is a sad generalisation.

Personally there's nothing better than dissapearing for a few days into the bush and having to rely on my abilities and skills to get me through the day and night. I started this post because I'm sure there's a few guys out there who find this very interesting.

In general I always over prepare, I find I enjoy myself more and rely less on others. There's nothing wrong in planning for a contingency. How far you want to take that is your prerogative. End of the day "Use it, don't use it", it's completely up to you.

Yes, perhaps bigger, which will make a tsunami look like a sunday picnic - so my question remains, where will my BOB be of any assistance - guys this is boy scout stuff!

Ok Zulu, I see your point - going out into the bush for a few days and relying on own skills, but natural disasters of huge magnitude, no ways, count yourself a gonner!

Actualy, pretty much the same as at the turn of the century, when it was predicted that the world will end, clocks would go into reverse etc....... Then they said stock up on tinned foods, build a shelter and whatever - what the hell for if the world was going to end!

Well MikeD, each to his own then...

Unfortunately there's always people that are alive after things of this nature...

As for 'end of world' predictions, 2012, Mayan calendar, Nubiro, blah, blah, blah... NOP! I'm not into that, I just like being prepared that's all.

Zulu, I go with that track of thought - enjoy bud and make sure you always have your rod at hand and if the situations allows, have your yak too!
