What i started doing is counting the amount of turns it takes me to reel in the line. On my Trini20 i get about 130 turns on the handle on a locked drag. so am i correct in saying i am getting about working on 46in per crank (as per Shimano website) i am getting just about 150m on a cast with an 8oz? Even if i had to reduce it by say... 30m to compensate for things like stretch and drag in the water it means im getting about 120m which i think is not to bad, i have been putting in some hectic time practicing my casting. 46 inch = 1.1684 metre Am i correct or do i have this all horribly wrong Last edited on Tue Aug 3rd, 2010 08:48 am by camboy |

Interesting. How do you compensate for the fact that the circumference of the spool is getting smaller; the further you cast? Or I am missing something?

Plus it gives you indication of Sea Breeze,etc,which sometimes can't be noticed on shore. On a full spool of line,I deduct 10% from my turns in distance.If I say throw 120 in turns,then I multiply that by ,9m(90% of 120)and then deduct further 10%. If you really want to get closer to calculating actual distance thrown,measure 1 full turn with uncasted reel,then after casting,measure 1 turn with remainder of spool.Take both measurements,and divide by 2 & multiply by Nr of turns and you should be spot on. Remember as well that that 1.16m is measured with a full spool,so that anyone reading this doesn't get confused with half spool of line. Just my 2c!

Have been struggling to get hold of a line counter at tackle shops in CT. I have however found a very easy and effective way of measuring distance on a field.You should try it.... All you do is walk the length of a soccer field which is known as 100m.Count your steps that you take and you will be suprised at the consistancy, i walk at my normal walking pace and I almost always get 114 steps.(57 steps to Halfway). So using this method I know that 1m = 1.14 steps. Every 11,5 steps is 10 metres. So its pretty easy to measure my distance like this. Remember that everyone has a different stride etc so walk the length of a soccer field 3 times and then you will know how many steps it takes and do your calculations.......... easy as pie.

Hi iam a newbie. I dont understand how 1 rotation gives you over a meter. On 1 turn of the handle you getting just over 6 revolutions on the spool. On 1 turn of the spool you getting about 15 cm of line so u getting about 90 cm of line on each turn. Check on your own 1 crank on the handle how much line it takes in. I stand to be corrected though. Tight lines

The crank handle is a nice indication of distance, but as mentioned earlier, the circumference around the top surface of the spooled line gets smaller as the spool gets emptier. I would at least take a mean of the total contents of the spool when using this method. Here's what you do: Tie your line to something (tree?) and walk out the entire spool. Measure the distance (I found using two trees on Google Earth works well). Count the number of cranks needed to return all the line. Divide distance by cranks to get the mean distance per crank. If the spool takes a lot of line it might be good to take two mean distances, One for the topshot and one for the backing.

 The easiest way to measure casting distance is to.Add bait to the hook, cast in water, if you get a bite -- you are casting far enough  (sorry guys just had to)

I don't realy mind how far I cast. I usually look at the water, pick the spot I want my bait to be, and try to get it there... I f it is out of my reach, well then I move on to better water. I do however need to know more or less how to measure line back home when I setup a new reel. I like to split a 300 yard spool of Fireline in half to get two 140m sections. Since I never cast that far I can spool only one of the sections over cheaper nylon and thus fill two setups for the price of one.
