hey there, tif

I've just chatted to a buddy of mine

he says that right now the bream are on the bite cos the water is very muddy

also he says if you on the boat trawling is good you cover more ground in this way.

you should trawl large rattle type lures and if this fails sardine have also been producing some good size tigers.

if you have any more queries try a place called shayamoya they have experienced guids there and are always willing to give out info,

Hope this helps

Cheers Riymos

Hey Tiffer,

The latest tightline Magazine has a good write up on tigers, if you understand Afrikaans.

One of the things which was obvious in the article was, what (lures, baits etc) works for tigers in one area mightl not work for tigers in another area.

Try and find out from the locals or guides what lure or bait configuration is working in that area.

Hi Tiffer

Will you be launching from the boat club? If so go to the right of the dam (where the Pongola river flows in - work the middel of the channel). Another spot (far) is to the Swazi side (go to the small bays that the clifs make). Best bait - Live Kurper 100mm. I have also had a lot of success with fly - dedcievers / zonkers / minnows. You would need a fast sinking line and at least a 8wt rod.

If you fish with the Kurper cast uot a few feet leave the spool open and lightly hook your line around a empty beer bottle neck. The fish will take and tumble the bottle - let it run 15sec then strike.

Bait

Jozini dam plays host to a variety of smaller fish species which can be used as live bait. Of these species small Tilapia are most popular.

Lures

Popular lures for tigerfish include:

Mepps Black Fury #4 (Copper/Yellow)
Effzet Spoons (Single or twin blade)
Rapala Shadrap (Fire Tiger or Crawdad)
Rapala Magnum (Red Head)

Flies

A variety of Saltwater flies, like deceivers and clousers work well.

Colours will be determined by the time of year and water clarity. Colours to use are red/yellow/white, blue/white, green/white and chartreuse/white.

Other popular flies to use for tigers are:

Fire Tiger Clouser
Zambezi Deceiver
Zonker Strip
Malcolm’s Rabbit
Mrs Simpson (Good all-rounder)
Plewmans Robber
Mickey Finn
