For anyone that is interested..As far as I know the only reason also that they are in the atlantic africa is they got kicked out of east africa by the pirates..our tuna stock owes those pirates dearly, last few years yellowfin been good!!

I hope someone in china reads this, well written report and it shows what we have been saying all these years about the Chinese raping the ocean and it seems abusing their fishermen, you can't even call it racist or nationist, as a bunch of the offending companies are state owned or the state has shares, as well it owns a fair chunk of the supply chain. I hope someone in DAFF reads this...

We give out licences for inshore bottom trawling to our own..and those in power have shares no doubt. And it is internationally acknowledged to be an old destructive method of fishing that must be phased out, when are we going to come to the party...I guess with those in power owning shares in the fishing companies and the previous president bust taking 2 million rand bribe himself from chinese perlie poachers (although he only got 1 bar out in the end and felt shortchanged...can't script this s#it in SA!), so although I hope for change I aint holding my breath and carry on fishing sustainably by choice as one more who doesn't just is an extra nail in the coffin...anyway I'm not going hungry tonight, the sea looks after me. But also if it wasn't for those wonderful pirates in Somalia, my freezer would be half as full..God Bless them for saving our tuna...

I also watched a program called Trafficked on National Geographic, hosted by Mariana van Zeller. She focused on black market fishing and primarily the Chinese and Spanish illegal fishing industries, specifically but limited to West Africa.

As she mentioned, it is the largest poaching operation globally. These fleets target either traditionally corrupt countries or countries unable to defend their marine systems.

I see that the US navy has been in the area recently conducting operations...Illegal fishing vessels arrested and a few coke smugglers.

Yes, this is a global problem and needs to be addressed as such. Although it cannot be expected for other countries to continuously support as those 'support costs' are not 'offered' for free either.
