Is a budget plastic kayak a terrible idea for fishing the back line?

Hoping someone can enlighten me about buying one of the cheaper plastic fishing skis.

The story:
My parents recently retired to Klein Brak and as a vaalie I enjoy visiting the sea and fishing so I will try and go there once or twice a year work permitting. I spent my youth in cape town, lived in the ocean surfing and on a small rubber duck crayfishing/fishing etc so I'm familiar with the unpredictably of the ocean.

Now I'd like to get a fishing ski to leave at my parents place but since its something I realistically will only use a few times a year buying one of the fancy kayaks doesn't make sense financially.

So the question is if I plan to only fish the back line and the rivers is a cheaper plastic kayak sufficient? If so which ones should I look into? I'm 6 foot and about 80kg.

Estuaries yes, backline no..unless you are a waterman, then a sup will suffice and you gotta have balls of steel, my mate was buzzed every trip we were on the backline in the boat and he was on the sup..One johnie would not leave him alone, the bronzies were just irritating but the grey boy had to take a paddle to the nose to get the message LOL..

Has anyone been pushed around in their kayak? Or do they just eyball you? I was also told not to ski in Gordon's bay but it was before air jaws showed on TV so didn't know I was a giant lure being towed behind a boat.

Like most things - let common sense apply. You should be fine on good weather days - just don't push it.

We often use a tupperware for getting bugs, extra safety boat at lifesaving training etc.

As for skiing in GB, yep, skiing, wakeboarding and tubing - unless the cray boats are cleaning.
There are so few (if any) GW left in the bay.....

Ja GW's all moved up the warmer east coast due to orcas last few years, although orcas also been heading east..

Thanks for the responses, I'm having a look around for second hand kayak's. If I can pick up a decent stealth or something I'll take that otherwise I will likely buy a Fluid Bamba. What else can I look at that won't break the bank? Ther'e not a lot of info around on kayak fishing and equipment it seems.

Get yourself something like a stealth bfs, should get a second hand one for cheap. You must have rudder for when the wind picks up and a proper anchor system.

Lots of whites in that part of the coast so don’t go alone and don’t buy a red and white kayak. Not too long ago the back of a surf ski was chomped of by a white near Plett.

Managed to pick up a evolution 465. (In white and red) busy putting together all the goodies to go along with the ski so the bank account is taking a hammering

I've decided to only fish the estuaries this December to get a better feel for things. Will spend most of my time on Klein brak and will then venture to Gauritz, Groot brak, Sedgefield for a day here and there if I can between family Christmas responsibilities.

Will keep a lookout for the red and white kayak at Kleinbrak. Hopefully with rods bent over double.
