over the years swartvlei produced some trophy fish.....still does.....a handful of "old hands" still secretly catch a lot of monster size fish......the "old salts" now and again send some watssup photos of awesome fish from swartvlei........febr march apr till may is believed to be the best time.......and if you lucky that the mouth is open and you get a bit of tidal flow with a high spring tide.......water temp is very important......above 16 is perfect......for some unknown reason the outsize garrick and even kobs prefer cape stumpies as live bait....in any other river or lagoon its mullet or juvenile elf.....but in swartvlei.....stumpies.......4/0 or 5/0 kedal at bottom back fin......elf and big mullet love pillies.....and the best grunters believe it or not little live kurpertjies....no one knows why......also bloodworm from knysna deadly bait......the guys with no outboards on the kayaks and row boats are the ones who make the catches......kobs like the area at "bloekombome"...."treinbrug"......the larger lake area north of the treinbruggie......this last two spots also produce leeries......the grunters like area past bloekombome as it narrows and the area of the caravan park at swartvlei.....also the great lake area north of the treinbruggie......this is a few general guidelines.....need to put effort in....work at night time and very early in the morning....also late afternoon.....i went with some locals not too long ago.....amazing numbers of good size elf in swartvlei on pillie(sardine)......also some outsize grunters....remember one year fish in 6 to 8 kg class came out.....but like any other place if conditions not perfect you can blank....
Wow, what an informative write up!
Thanks for this, wishing you many more big catches!
Also I have spoke to the guy from the tackle shop who said there is kob being produced their currently and that the mouth is closed they are waiting for it to open naturally.
Packed some of my tackle last night only to find my worker broke my pvc pump.
Hopefully if time permits i'll try to get one today.
