Hi guys, looking at getting a new spinning rod. And as I am a bit of a Penn fan I am looking at the Penn Regiment either 10ft or 11ft . Rod will be used mostly to spin for shad and occasionally throwing a bait. Any reviews of guys having used the rod will be appreciated.

I also have the 11', lovely rod - incredible how strong it is / how much backbone it has for how light it is. Casts really well/easily - it's quite a stiff rod but not so much that it makes casting require too much precision - easily get 90m+ with a 2oz plug (I have it paired with a clash 5000 with 30lb JDB xtreme braid). Can push for more distance but I've had a few wind knots on such occasions - only (tiny) gripe is the guides - K-series would have been better. But it's far from a real issue. Actually, at first I had Berkley Fireline on, which is a strange / rather lumpy braid, once I changed the wind knots disappeared really. I've also used it for a bit of scratching, 2-3oz sinker and small baits, works real well - have picked up a very feisty smooth hound of about 6kg, also a fair-sized eagle ray one night this way and rod handled both just fine. All that being said, it's the only spinning rod I've owned (aside from an 8' mitchell master caster), so personally don't truly know how it compares to other options.

Hi guys, So I went to the tackle shop today and they only had a 9ft regiment. Ended up buying a Daiwa Exceler 10ft.

off topic the Shimano SpeedCast looks a good purpose built spinning rod.. reel seat and guides and blank sounds a win win and might see it surface here in future with catches and mini reports maybe.. few models available already and differently priced though one is in your price bracket waiting for it to be locally available to view it and consider if not already here as i haven't been in a tackle shop for a few months. best thing about tackle is you can always have more or upgrade later lol.
