A WORD OF WARNING

Don't know how many people are aware of this but as of April 2016 new size restrictions have been implemented by Emirates Airlines for flights to and from Africa.

You are allowed 2 baggage items (max 23 kg each). A fishing rod/s is regarded as an item. The height restriction is 1.5 m. Anything over is regarded as excess baggage and there is an extra charge of 265 USD per item. They are unwavering in this regard. This goes for surfboards, ski's etc.

We are going to have to look at 3 piece popping & jigging rods for the UAE & Oman. Has anyone been burned for exceeding the size restrictions?

Flying to Oman from Abuja on 19 March for a GT trip with No Boundaries and this is just more bad news....Abuja (international) airport is closing on 8 March for 6 - 8 weeks to have the runway fixed, meaning I will have to travel to another city, 4 hour drive away, where currently there is huge unrest, to get a flight to Lagos, from where I will take an Emirates flight to Dubai, in order to fly to Salalah...

...the fishing had better be worth it :?

2 items is exactly that... you will be fined if the item count exceeds 2.


the total overall dimensions when added up must not exceed 1500.

thus

an item 1000 long 200 wide and 300 deep will qualify as adding up to 1500mm, that is the correct interpretation and confirm via a phone call to emirates.

however, our team was able to transport rods bundled together without and hassle from here to Ireland and back. they do have a sporting goods rule but fishing was "NOT" on the list at the time.

the rods were in tubes 1600mm long by about 200 deep and 200 wide (three rods)

maybe call emirates and explain to them, they were extremely helpful

I can recommend flying with Qatar Airways if you flying from SA.. direct flights from CPT and JHB, and then a direct flight to Salalah... if you book in advance ( I use cheapoair.com ) you can get some really good deals.

They do not have a "Sporting Allowance" for fishing tackle either, but most airlines don't anyway.. fat golfers and their bags are no problem, but fisherman they klap...

But I have resigned myself to the fact that excess baggage is part of the trip costs... its tough to travel within weight and baggage allowances if you going on a Jigging/Popping trip anywhere these days... or maybe its just tough leaving anything at home because of that "just in case" mentality we all seem to have..

Even after 4 trips to No Boundaries in Oman, I have a pretty good idea of what I need, but always seem to take way too much.. :-(

as Nepptune said Quatar is the best bet as is BA (british airways) they have a restriction of 1.7 metre but no weight restriction on rod tubes.

only weight restriction was on luggage and that was 25kg , virgin and airfrance are doing the same restrictions on sporting goods with regards to length of rod tubes.
