Sedgefield fishing

BIG FISH MAN

New member
Hi all, the Sedgefield lagoon in closed and all I have caught is a barbel an two small stumpnose in the channel near the mouth. We asked the tourism office when they would open the lagoon and they don't have a clue. Should I not bother fishing in the lagoon and go to Knysna or Wilderness? Please help, advice will be much appreciated

Hi BIG FISH

I will be down there from the 16th Dec.

My best bet if you want to fish the lagoon is at the train bridge.

But for me I will be focusing the sea, should get some kob, well at least I always get 1 or 2.

So fish the beach area between swartvlei and the lagoon, and then as well as myoli beach side away from the lagoon, that is what I will do

Hope this helps let me know if you catch anything and what is conditions like?

Hi Big Fish Man

Normally, any blind estuary will still produce fish. Conditions differ obviously as there is no tidal movement so low light hours is best but they will not necessarily feed in same the areas as they would with pushing and dropping tides. Remember that fish can survive for long periods of time in a blind river but keep in mind that species such as Kob and Garrick do not reproduce while the mouth is closed so please practise catch and release as far as possible,

However, I am not sure of the state of water quality of Swartvlei as I know they had problems before with too much algae in the water while the mouth is closed. This causes oxygen levels to drop and fish become less active.

If you have access to a boat or kayak I would say your chances of success would be better but you will never know without a line in the water. Ask a couple of the locals or check in at the tackle shop for some recent info.

I will be down there by 7 January. What are the dates you guys will be staying? Arlu, when are you leaving?

Dan is spot on.

Early morning...early like 02:00 to 05:00 ~ at the break of the dawn the fish are shy and move off.
That will apply to the coastline as well.

Of late the water was gin clear and too warm ~ Bellman in the Goukamma area were also reluctant to feed. Blacktail plenty with a few small sand steenbras.

Apparently O2 levels are good....sadly dead mullet have been found in the shallows ~ presumed to have come from illegal gill netting which is on-going in the estuary areas.

If you notice any illegal activities please report to San Parks...your assistance required.
